About Syrah

Syrah is a relative newcomer to Switzerland, but it has quickly established itself as one of the country's most exciting red varieties. Planted primarily in Valais, where the warm, dry climate and steep, south-facing slopes mirror conditions in the Northern Rhône, Swiss Syrah produces wines of genuine distinction.

The style tends toward elegance rather than power — peppery, floral, with dark fruit and a fine-grained tannic structure. Valais Syrah from producers in Chamoson, Fully, and Leytron has won blind tastings against established Northern Rhône wines, putting Swiss Syrah on the international map.

Plantings are growing rapidly, and Syrah is increasingly found in Geneva as well. For visitors who know Syrah only from Australia or the Rhône, tasting Swiss examples offers a genuinely different perspective on the grape — altitude, continental climate, and Swiss precision creating a unique expression.
